52 Stories: #11 Great thought provoking monuments

The Soviet memorial, this is the place Victor likes to think back to when he thinks of Treptow-Köpenick. In his very first week in Berlin, back in 2006, he read in his travel guide that the Soviet memorial existed. And since his first time was all about getting to know his new district, his new home, Victor set off on a journey to various places in Berlin to familiarize himself with them. "I was amazed by this place," were his first thoughts. After almost 15 years Victor still likes to come here, now with his daughter. When his friends and relatives come to visit him in Berlin, he also brings himself here. "We don't know anything like this, it's quite amazing here. I don't know why, but I have a fascination for Eastern Europe. Before I came to Berlin, I was in Prague, and then in the middle of Europe. To see something like that in Berlin - it made me think a lot about wars." There are 16 white limestone sarcophagi in all, with the names of over 7000 dead. "Do you know why 16?" Victor asks. "They represent the 16 Soviet Union republics." Nergis is looking for your stories - 52 short portraits in total. Write her: This email address is being protected from spambots.
